For safety sake, get your bike registered on Sat., Oct. 20 at the Phoenix Public Market

Hey Phoenix bicycle owners! Did you know thieves are less likely to steal a registered bicycle since its owner can easily be identified. Or, that bicycle registration aids in identifying the owner in case of a crash, as many bicyclists don’t carry ID, which is especially true of children. And, registering your bicycle increases the likelihood it will be returned to you if recovered.

With these facts in mind, the Evans Churchill Community Association, Phoenix Spokes People, Phoenix Public Market, and City of Phoenix Police Department are teaming up provide FREE bicycle registration for you, your family, and friends! Just drop by the Phoenix Public Market during the Fourth Annual Bike Bazaar! and all will be taken care of. Useful bicycle safety information, tchotchkes, and Q&A are also on tap! Under the Evans Churchill tent, just look for friendly neighborhood and community volunteers – and City of Phoenix police officers who manage the City’s bicycle registration program.

Attend Oct. 10 open house re APS substation options in the neighborhood

Message from Arizona Public Service (APS):

“You are invited to an open house to learn about APS plans to power downtown Phoenix’s continued growth with safe, clean, and reliable energy:

  • Wednesday, October 10, 2018
  • 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Roosevelt Community Church, 924 N. 1st St.

As you know, downtown Phoenix has grown significantly in recent years, and is expecting even more growth over the next decade. Arizona Public Service (APS) is planning to build more infrastructure to power that development, including a new electric substation. We are in the final stages of selecting a location for this substation. Currently, the two potential sites are located between 1st Street to 4th Street, McKinley Street to Portland Street.

We are working to confirm the site by December 2018 in order to keep this project on schedule with the area’s growing need for electricity. Ultimately we will select the location based on the following criteria:

  • Availability of land, including size and condition of property;
  • Adjacency to existing overhead and underground power lines needed to connect the substation to the electrical system;
  • Proximity to APS current and future customers served by the substation;
  • Minimizing construction impact to residents and businesses;
  • Maximizing opportunities to enhance downtown development and the urban streetscape.

The map below shows the area where the new substation needs to be located to serve growing energy needs and potential sites identified with earlier public and agency input.

An important part of our Downtown Substation planning process is to continue collecting input from residents, property owners, businesses, and community organizations. That is why we are inviting you to this open house where you can learn more about this project, our site selection process and potential architectural designs.

Throughout the planning process, information on this downtown substation project will be available at aps.com/siting (under Current Projects, click “find out more”). Comments can be submitted directly to Kendra Lee, APS Program Manager, at Kendra.Lee@aps.com or 602-371-7872.”

No Evans Churchill meeting in August. We’ll see you in September!

The Evans Churchill Community Association (ECCA) and Roosevelt Row Merchants Association are taking a summer break and will return with their regular monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 12. On Saturday, the ECCA Board of Directors held their annual strategic planning session, discussed a boatload of ideas, and will work throughout the month to set things in motion for the future. You’ll learn all about it and be able to provide feedback at the September meeting.

If you need something to do tomorrow evening – now that you have an open night! – consider the following: Downtown Phoenix advocates will host Strong Towns president Charles Marohn at a free, public Curbside Chat on Aug. 8, 2018, at the A.E., England Building at Civic Space Park. Reception 5 p.m., Welcome/Program, 5:30 p.m., Q&A and Discussion, 7 p.m. Facebook event invite here.

Strong Towns focuses on the type of development and investments that make long-term fiscal sense for cities and taxpayers. It believes that “growth is not enough; we need productive growth” and “places that are built for people, using traditional development patterns, can help us achieve productive growth.” Charles will present examples on how choice in development patterns affect municipal finances.
